At 60 years of age, I have been a flat hitter in table tennis all my life, when it comes to attacking a higher ball. Normally, I play most of my shots with heavy backspin, which can frustrate many opponents, and most importantly, it wins me many points. I try to do whatever works best for me, depending on my opponent, having worked out with the majority of them, what they’re less comfortable with.
Top spin has never been my go, as I find it easier to flat hit when attacking and putting backspin on most balls, during the rallies. It’s too late to reach a high level but I’m happy with my current level. Unless the opponents are too good, most of the time I improve through my tactics and ball placement, adjusting where necessary, during the game.
Therefore, I will always choose a flat hit over top spin and it generally works for me, as I don’t try to hit the ball too hard, as I usually go for placement.
